Introduction

AquaGuardian is a marine conservation project at Dubai’s World Islands, inspired by Bayyinah Salahuddin’s research on the environmental impact of artificial islands in Dubai. It addresses these challenges through three key functions: marine rescue and rehabilitation, long-term researcher accommodation, and immersive environmental education for children. Designed with both above-water and underwater experiences, AquaGuardian emotionally engages young visitors through sensory zones and workshops. Using sustainable materials and thoughtful design, it transforms human impact into learning opportunities. AquaGuardian empowers a new generation to protect our oceans by combining scientific research, emotional connection, and hands-on sustainability education.

AquaGuardian operates with three main functions: rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals, expanding research on the environmental effects of artificial islands, and raising awareness—particularly among children—through sensory-based education that inspires empathy, responsibility, and lifelong ocean stewardship.

The site at Dubai World Islands offers a strategic and symbolic location for AquaGuardian. Situated at the heart of this artificial archipelago—specifically within the highly publicized 'Heart of Europe'—the project is placed at the core of the very issue it seeks to address: human impact on marine ecosystems. The man-made nature of the islands highlights the delicate balance between development and environmental responsibility, making it a fitting setting for rescue, rehabilitation, and marine research. Surrounded entirely by water, the site lends itself to seamless above- and underwater design integration, while boat-only access reinforces a sense of journey, isolation, and immersion—ideal for educational experiences and focused conservation efforts.

The layout ensures smooth transitions between public learning zones and private rescue and rehabilitation areas, offering an environment that is both educational and emotionally impactful.
